Program 3 of 4 · Ages 4+ years
Junior KG
Reading and numbers start to appear, still through play and real things.
The year in essence
In junior KG the first real reading and counting begin, but they come through games and objects children can hold, not worksheets. The class takes up a theme from the children's own world, and they ask questions about it, build things, and explain what they found to their friends. Phonics starts here too, as sound games rather than drills. It should still feel like play, because it is.

What this year builds
Three pillars of Junior KG
Phonics as a game
Sound games, letter hunts and word-building that make reading feel like a puzzle worth cracking.
Numbers you can hold
Counting, sorting and comparing with real objects, long before the symbols on a page mean much.
Small investigations
The children pick a theme, ask about it, build something, and tell the class what they worked out. This is where scientific thinking starts.
