The Campus
A calm place, with room to run.
The old rock-cut caves sit in the hill just above us. Down at the bottom we have a smaller, softer sort of place: bright rooms, a yard to play in, and the hill for a backdrop.
The spaces
Every corner has a purpose
The rooms are set up with some thought. The question we keep asking is a simple one: what does a small child need here to feel capable and calm?
The classrooms
Plenty of light, shelves low enough for children to reach, and not too much on the walls. Calm rooms, because children settle better in them.
The yard
Sand, swings, a bit of garden, and the hill above. The children go outside every day the weather allows, and most days it does.
The reading corner
Cushions and picture books in a quiet spot, where children fall for stories long before they can read them.
The art table
Paint, clay, fabric, odds and ends. We care more about the making than about a neat picture to carry home.
Meals and naps
A clean, supervised space for eating and sleeping, with home-style food. It matters most for the day care children, who are here the longest.
Drop-off and pick-up
A calm handover, no crush at the gate, and staff who know every family by face. We always check who is collecting a child.
Safety
The things that keep them safe
Children should feel free, not watched over, so the safety side is our job and not theirs. We think about it carefully and check it often. To the children, it is simply a place where they are looked after.
