What is the right age for playgroup? Readiness matters more than the calendar

The most common question we hear from Nashik parents is also the simplest: 'Is my child ready for playgroup?' The honest answer is that age, usually somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 years, is only the beginning of the answer. Two children of exactly the same age can be months apart in readiness, and both are perfectly normal.

What readiness actually looks like

A child ready for playgroup can usually tolerate short separations from a parent. Not happily at first, but recoverably. They show curiosity about other children, even if they only watch from a distance. They can communicate basic needs somehow: a word, a gesture, a determined point. None of this needs to be polished. Playgroup is where these abilities grow; they only need to have sprouted.

What playgroup is actually for

A good playgroup is not an academic head start, and any program promising reading or writing at age two deserves your skepticism. The real work of playgroup is quieter: learning that the world beyond home is safe, that other adults can be trusted, that other children are interesting, and that 'I can do it' feels wonderful. These foundations carry more weight in later schooling than any early alphabet.

The settling-in period is part of the design

Tears in the first days are normal and are not a verdict. What matters is how a school handles them. Ask any preschool you visit about its settling-in process. You want to hear about short first days, a parent nearby in the beginning, and a pace decided by the child. A school that expects every child to adjust in three days has designed its process for its own convenience.

If you're unsure, visit

Readiness is much easier to judge in a real environment than at home. Bring your child to a campus, let them see the space, and watch. Most parents know within twenty minutes. A thoughtful school will also tell you honestly if waiting a few months would serve your child better. We routinely do.
